The holidays are upon us! The holiday season is one we look forward to every year because it is that once a year occasion that is full of family, friends, great food, and great memories. Unfortunately, the holidays aren’t always compatible with a healthy lifestyle.
All those festive, indulgent parties coupled with the stress of the holidays can mean disaster for our overall health and well-being. But it doesn’t have to be that way, with a few tips and tricks, it’s possible to still splurge, party, enjoy and have fun this holiday season without compromising your health and safety.
Here are some ways to have a guilt-free and happy holiday season:
1. Remember to wash your hands often to help prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses.
Covid is still with us along with the flu, so it’s always good practice to keep our hands clean by washing with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds.
2. Don’t drink and drive.
Drinking and driving is irresponsible and it puts everyone on the road in danger. Choose not to drink or if you must drink make sure that there is a designated driver among your group who is able to drive safely.
3. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
More often than not, you will be exposed to social smoking during parties. Keep in mind that not only smokers have greater health risks because of their tobacco use, but also nonsmokers who are exposed to tobacco smoke.
4. Prepare food safely.
Remember these simple steps: Wash hands and surfaces often, avoid cross-contamination, cook foods to proper temperatures and refrigerate foods promptly.
5. Outsmart the buffet.
Have a small plate of the foods you like best and then move away from the buffet table. Start with vegetables to take the edge off your appetite. Limit your portion sizes and foods high in fat, salt, and sugar. Eat slowly. It takes at least 20 minutes for your brain to realize you’re full.
6. Be on the move (exercise!).
You’ve got a lot on your plate this time of year, quite literally, and physical activity may be last on your list. But actually, one secret weapon we have this holiday season is being active. Being active (and staying active) can help make up for all the buffets we raided as well as reduce stress during this most stressful time of year. So, get moving with friends and family, one example is brisk walking after a heavy holiday meal.
7. Get vaccinated.
This is another secret holiday weapon we have. Vaccinations help prevent diseases and save lives. Get your flu, pneumonia and COVID shots today.
